This Filipino American Life–hosted by Michael Nailat, Elaine Dolalas, Joe Bernardo and Ryan Carpio–is a podcast that explores the nuanced experiences of Filipinos in the United States, at iba pa (and more).
Back in 2016. I, first, heard about it through my college friends [from UCI], Mike and Elaine. I later found out that one of their co-hosts, Joe, was someone I knew from back in my high school days, a dear friend of my sister’s. My family remembers him as “Filipino” Joe.
Fast forward to 2018. In a recent Google Hang Out, Eros, Michelle [also fellow UCI heads] and I were discussing TFAL’s Filipino Slang episode for the very first time. As fate would have it, I received a message that the TFAL was going to be recording in Las Vegas and was invited to speak with the TFAL crew.
TFAL Episode 24.5
I had the honor of being featured on This Filipino American Life Podcast. Please give a listen. The episode covers my transition from Long Beach to Las Vegas, my journey from suit-and-tie guy to MMA and Jiu Jitsu, Cobra Kai and Ten Braves.
I appear on the second half of the episode (46 min mark), but more importantly I think this podcast is something the Fil-Am community should get behind. Though I’ve been spoiled in LA & Las Vegas by being around so many other Filipinos, even I grew up hoping there would be Filipinos in the media to look up to or relate to… I pretty much found my hero’s in DJ’s, B-Boys and Bruce Lee (not even Filipino but the biggest asian star there was). I can only imagine for others out in the mid-west or other less Filipino-populated regions. The podcast gives a voice and a story for our people.
There are also tons of other topics they explore that I’m sure you would relate to, find interesting and/or funny. If you like what they’re doing, follow on Facebook and Instagram. Subscribe and rate them on iTunes. Share with other Fil-Ams! Salamat!
